MISA DE GALLO: LET THE FINAL 9 DAYS COUNTDOWN BEGIN

You call it Misa de Gallo or Simbang Gabi - both just mean ONE THING...it's 9 days more - the long awaited, almost four-month preparation and anticipation, the CULMINATION of all year-round celebrations - and it's CHRISTMAS DAY!

Traditionally, Christmas Day in the Philippines is ushered in by the nine-day dawn masses that start on December 16. Known as the Misa de Gallo (Rooster's Mass) in the traditional Spanish and in Filipino as Simbang Gabi, or "Night Mass", this novena of Masses is the most important Filipino Christmas tradition.

These nine dawn Masses are also considered as a Novena by the Catholic and Aglipayan faithfuls. This refers to the Roman Catholic and Aglipayan practice of performing nine days of private or public devotion to obtain special graces.

In some parishes, the Simbang Gabi begins as early as four o'clock in the morning. Going to mass this early for nine consecutive days is meant to show the churchgoer's devotion and faith as well as to heighten anticipation for the Nativity of Jesus. In traditional Filipino belief, however, completing the novena is also supposed to mean that God would grant the devotee's special wish or favour.

After hearing Mass, Filipino families partake of traditional Philippine Christmastime delicacies, either during breakfast at home or immediately outside the church, where they are sold. Vendors offer a wealth of native delicacies, including bibingka (rice flour and egg based cake, cooked using coals on top of and under the pastry), puto bumbong (a purple sticky rice delicacy which is steamed in bamboo tubes, with brown sugar and shredded dried coconut meat served as condiments), salabat (hot ginger tea) and chokolate (thick Spanish cocoa). In some Aglipayan churches, after the mass everybody is invited to partake the "painit" (after mass snacks of delicacies with hot coffee or tsokolate) at the house of the sponsor of the mass.

In recent times, even the Evangelical Christians, and other independent Christian Churches have started holding services in the early mornings like the ones that are being done by the Catholics and some Mainline Protestant

Misa de Gallo is the Spanish phrase for Midnight mass, more literally translated as "Rooster's Mass".

It is said that the "Rooster's Mass" owes its name to the idea that a rooster would have been among the first to witness the birth of Jesus, and thus be the one to announce it.

In most Spanish speaking countries, Misa de gallo entails a typical midnight mass, starting at around 12:00 a.m. on Christmas Eve.

The custom in the Philippines is that it is a novena of dawn Masses, usually beginning at around 3:00-4:30 a.m., and running from December 16 up to December 24. This practise started during the Spanish colonial period when priests held early dawn masses for the farmers who wanted to attend Christmas mass but could not leave their fields. These masses were held before daybreak, hence the Filipino term "Simbang Gabi" (Midnight Mass). Even today, Filipinos wake up very early in the morning to attend the Misa de Gallo as an expression of devotion to God and the Blessed Virgin Mary. A commonly-held belief is that if an individual completes the nine consecutive days of the Simbang Gabi, the act would merit a wish made by the devotee being granted.

One of the customs related to the Philippine Misa de Gallo is the selling of traditional Philippine food, such as puto bumbong (a purple colored rice pastry, seasoned with grated--coconut and brown sugar), tsokolate (a hot cocoa drink), bibingka (flour and egg cakes cooked on top and under), and salabat, or ginger tea, which are sold by vendors outside churches to the faithful.

IS IT or IS IT NOT?

Italian scientist reproduces Shroud of Turin

Reuters – The Turin Shroud is shown in this August 1978 file photo in negative version. An Italian scientist says …

Rightmost is the REPRODUCTION

By Philip Pullella Mon Oct 5, 11:30 am ET

ROME (Reuters) – An Italian scientist says he has reproduced the Shroud of Turin, a feat that he says proves definitively that the linen some Christians revere as Jesus Christ's burial cloth is a medieval fake.

The shroud, measuring 14 feet, 4 inches by 3 feet, 7 inches bears the image, eerily reversed like a photographic negative, of a crucified man some believers say is Christ.

"We have shown that is possible to reproduce something which has the same characteristics as the Shroud," Luigi Garlaschelli, who is due to illustrate the results at a conference on the para-normal this weekend in northern Italy, said on Monday.

A professor of organic chemistry at the University of Pavia, Garlaschelli made available to Reuters the paper he will deliver and the accompanying comparative photographs.

The Shroud of Turin shows the back and front of a bearded man with long hair, his arms crossed on his chest, while the entire cloth is marked by what appears to be rivulets of blood from wounds in the wrists, feet and side.

Carbon dating tests by laboratories in Oxford, Zurich and Tucson, Arizona in 1988 caused a sensation by dating it from between 1260 and 1390. Sceptics said it was a hoax, possibly made to attract the profitable medieval pilgrimage business.

But scientists have thus far been at a loss to explain how the image was left on the cloth.

Garlaschelli reproduced the full-sized shroud using materials and techniques that were available in the middle ages.

They placed a linen sheet flat over a volunteer and then rubbed it with a pigment containing traces of acid. A mask was used for the face.

PIGMENT, BLOODSTAINS AND SCORCHES

The pigment was then artificially aged by heating the cloth in an oven and washing it, a process which removed it from the surface but left a fuzzy, half-tone image similar to that on the Shroud. He believes the pigment on the original Shroud faded naturally over the centuries.

They then added blood stains, burn holes, scorches and water stains to achieve the final effect.

The Catholic Church does not claim the Shroud is authentic nor that it is a matter of faith, but says it should be a powerful reminder of Christ's passion.

One of Christianity's most disputed relics, it is locked away at Turin Cathedral in Italy and rarely exhibited. It was last on display in 2000 and is due to be shown again next year.

Garlaschelli expects people to contest his findings.

"If they don't want to believe carbon dating done by some of the world's best laboratories they certainly won't believe me," he said.

The accuracy of the 1988 tests was challenged by some hard-core believers who said restorations of the Shroud in past centuries had contaminated the results.

The history of the Shroud is long and controversial.

After surfacing in the Middle East and France, it was brought by Italy's former royal family, the Savoys, to their seat in Turin in 1578. In 1983 ex-King Umberto II bequeathed it to the late Pope John Paul.

The Shroud narrowly escaped destruction in 1997 when a fire ravaged the Guarini Chapel of the Turin cathedral where it is held. The cloth was saved by a fireman who risked his life.

Garlaschelli received funding for his work by an Italian association of atheists and agnostics but said it had no effect on his results.

"Money has no odor," he said. "This was done scientifically. If the Church wants to fund me in the future, here I am."

BLACKOUT AND MARTIAL LAW

Today, 37 years ago, the late President Ferdinand Edralin Marcos appeared on national television announcing that he has "placed the entire nation under martial rule".

Proclamation No. 1081's (the other name of ML) official date, however, was September 21, 1972.

Not many days ago, a government official announced on national television of the imminent power interruption which was to begin shortly, and quite surely stated to last until the 2010 election time. And the talks of 'emergency powers' to be exercised by the most powerful official in the land - that is the current President, PGMA, has become quite a topic.

LET'S TAKE A DIVERSION: If ONLY, MEN POSSESS a RUSSELL-like ATTITUDE!

Well, as a self-confessed basketball fanatic, let me bring you out of the "usual" topic here instead.

I didn't intend to talk about great basketball players here or great basketball games. But when I read MR. SPEAR's article today, I CAN'T afford to MISS by not sharing to 'you' Byron Russell's OUTLOOK on being the SACRIFICIAL LAMB of Michael Jordan's NBA Finals' Game 6 winning shot over him in MJ's Chicago Bull's 2nd Grand Slam and 6th Championship trophy in 1998.

Yes, Michael Jordan is GREAT and that was a great shot. But Byron Russell is GREATER!

I chatted with someone special last Sunday and came across with a number of write-ups "criticizing" MICHAEL JORDAN - the "suppose" NBA Legend and the GREATEST basketball player of all time - for his "INSECURITIES" revealed in his speech when inducted to the Hall of Fame.

Unlike his fellow inductees, he spoke of things, and quite photographically, which content was NEVER expected to come out especially in occasions like this. While there were good words, most were words that made Jordan be perceived by many as rude, insecure and as someone who had raked almost all basketball awards available - therefore so accomplished, yet he is one who cultivates ill-feelings with people he had encounters with, all this time.

I therefore REALIZED now, in that AMAZING winning shot by Jordan, it WAS Russell who was GREATER than the shot, and maybe even greater than Michael himself.

And when Jordan recalled his encounter with the then rookie Russell in his Hall of Fame induction speech, he made Russell GREATER the second time around!

Russell to Jordan: Game on

By Marc J. Spears, Yahoo! Sports Sep 13, 2:28 am EDT

Bryon Russell has a message for Michael Jordan: Whenever you’re ready, I’ll be waiting in California – in my basketball shorts.

“I’ll play his a— right now,” Russell told Yahoo! Sports. “This is a call-out for him to come play me. He can come out here in his private jet and come play. He’s got millions of dollars. He can pay for the jet. He can meet me at the Recreation Center in Calabasas.

“We can have Mark Jackson do the commentating. We can have Mitch Richmond do the officiating. We can put it on TV and see if Michael’s still got it.”

Jordan spent much of his enshrinement speech at the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame singling out players and coaches who had slighted, criticized or motivated him. Russell merited a special mention.

After Jordan’s first retirement from the NBA, he was playing minor-league baseball and stopped by the Chicago Bulls’ practice facility, where the Utah Jazz were working out. Jordan said Russell, then a rookie with the Jazz, introduced himself and challenged him.

“…At this time I had no thoughts of coming back and playing the game of basketball,” Jordan said during his speech. “Bryon Russell came over to me and said, ‘Why’d you quit? You know I could guard you. If I ever see you in a pair of shorts…’

“When I did come back in 1995 and we played Utah in ’96, I’m at the center circle and Bryon Russell is standing next to me. I said, ‘You remember the [comments] you made in 1994 about, ‘I think I can guard you, I can shut you down, I would love to play against you? Well, you’re about to get your chance.’ ”

When the teams met in the ’98 Finals, Jordan hit his famous championship-clinching shot after knocking Russell backward. Jazz coach Jerry Sloan and point guard John Stockton, who also were being inducted, both shook their heads as Jordan told the story.

“From this day forward,” Jordan said, “if I ever see him in shorts, I’m coming at him.”

Russell said Jordan’s story was accurate and that he was honored, not offended, by his words.

“It was during my rookie year,” Russell said. “He turned to Karl [Malone] and said, ‘Hey Karl, is that your rookie?’ I really did say that to him. Karl was laughing and [Jordan] was laughing, too. …I guess I motivated him to come back. There had to be other reasons. You know he likes all challenges.

“Out of all the people he came across, he thought about me. I’m happy to be in his Hall of Fame speech.”

Russell said “not a single day passes” in which someone doesn’t ask him about Jordan’s shot over him. While playing for the Denver Nuggets, Russell and then-Nuggets interim coach Michael Cooper got in a heated debate about whether Jordan’s shot over Russell or Julius Erving’s famous acrobatic dunk over Cooper was more embarrassing. Looking back, Russell said he wasn’t humiliated to be part of such a historic play.

“To me, that’s the greatest play in basketball history,” Russell said. “It will stay that way because he will always be the greatest player to play the game. I didn’t mind. But the referees didn’t make the call on the push off.

“It’s long done and gone. It was a call that wasn’t made on a play that was great.”

Russell didn’t watch the Hall of Fame induction ceremony live because he was running errands with his 11-year-old son, Brandon, in Calabasas, Calif., but he did record it. After Jordan mentioned him, Russell received a voice message from his old Long Beach State coach, Seth Greenberg. Several other friends and family members also called and sent him text messages. As soon as Russell got home, he rushed to the television to watch Jordan.

Jordan and Russell were teammates with the Washington Wizards during the 2002-03 season, Jordan’s last in the NBA. Russell said Jordan never brought up the story while they were together and they never played one-on-one, either. Russell, now 38, last played in the NBA during the 2005-06 season, but he works out daily and is eager to “guard [Jordan] again and beat him.”

Russell encouraged Jordan to get his phone number from a mutual friend if he’s up for the challenge. Until then, he wants Jordan to know this:

“I keep my basketball shorts on.”

If ONLY, MEN POSSESS BYRON RUSSELL's ATTITTUDE/PERSPECTIVE in 'LOOKING AT THINGS', what a shot we give each one to GREAT RELATIONSHIPS!

Even GREATER than ONESELF, indeed!

CHRISTMAS STARTS "BER" and NOW

Lifted from ART.com

Lifted from ART.com

ONLY IN THE PHILIPPINES!

As the "quite-a-saying" goes!

Whenever something UNIQUE/EXTRAORDINARY is done by a Filipino, or a tradition that has been practiced since time immemorial... we always take PRIDE in saying that!

In fact, the same statement is said even if it refers to the worst of feats the Filipino has ever dared doing, ONLY IN THE PHILIPPINES! --- and probably the same PRIDE goes with it.

But I am NOT talking about non-declaration of properties in other countries in my SALs, or my receiving of cash gifts in millions or about my latest jingle in my 2010 election-related INFOMERCIAL among others.

On the contrary, i am talking here of the uplifting, joyful, peace-giving and love-filled spirit of the Yuletide season that is CHRISTMAS!

My hearing of the first Christmas song in the air this morning while taking a sip of an aromatic coffee is a Filipino statement that the Season is just around the corner.

CHRISTMAS is unofficially (or is it OFFICIALLY?) HERE!

Oh, how'd you forget? It's the first day of SeptemBER!

Should I remind you, therefore, that CHRISTMAS in the Philippines starts on the first month that ends with 'BER!

MERRRY CHRRRISTMAS!!!

Unsaon man ni, AKO MAY UNA'G GREET (IKAW ang UTANGAN ug REGALO) nimu???!

CHAIRS AND TILES FOR OUR CHURCH!

Alas! GOOD NEWS to ALL of us Oslobanons!

A Cebuano with a GOOD HEART has expressed his commitment to donate chairs/pews for our newly re-constructed parish church. This Christianly gesture, obviously would mean unloading us with the heavy financial burden of providing it on our own, which if it were still left to us, shall take us a little longer before we could comfortably sit and properly dispose ourselves to listen and internalize the liturgy we celebrate together as a congregation. For we all know as a fact that up to this writing, each parishioner still has to bring his/her own chair in attending Sunday masses held in the church (daily masses are held in the camarin).

However, the donated chairs will arrive the moment the floor is tiled.

And so, modesty aside, Oslobanons who have soft spots in their hearts are INVITED to donate a tile or two, which amounts to (if my information is correct) P350 a tile.

Non-Oslobanons are INVITED too!

Let GOD return TO YOU, his favor as you facilitate the realization of His Kingdom on earth!

Solar eclipse pits superstition against science

AFP – An Indian astronomy researcher explains solar eclipses in Kolkata on July 19. Indian astrologers are …

by Phil Hazlewood Phil Hazlewood – Sun Jul 19, 10:23 pm ET

MUMBAI (AFP) – Indian astrologers are predicting violence and turmoil across the world as a result of this week's total solar eclipse, which the superstitious and religious view as a sign of potential doom.

But astronomers, scientists and secularists are trying to play down claims of evil portent in connection with Wednesday's natural spectacle, when the moon will come between the Earth and the sun, completely obscuring the sun.

In Hindu mythology, the two demons Rahu and Ketu are said to "swallow" the sun during eclipses, snuffing out its life-giving light and causing food to become inedible and water undrinkable.

Pregnant women are advised to stay indoors to prevent their babies developing birth defects, while prayers, fasting and ritual bathing, particularly in holy rivers, are encouraged.

Shivani Sachdev Gour, a gynaecologist at the Fortis Hospital in New Delhi, said a number of expectant mothers scheduled for caesarian deliveries on July 22 had asked to change the date.

"This is a belief deeply rooted in Indian society. Couples are willing to do anything to ensure that the baby is not born on that day," Gour said.

Astrologers have predicted a rise in communal and regional violence in the days following the eclipse, particularly in India, China and other Southeast Asian nations where it can be seen on Wednesday morning.

Mumbai astrologer Raj Kumar Sharma predicted "some sort of attack by (Kashmiri separatists) Jaish-e-Mohammad or Al-Qaeda on Indian soil" and a devastating natural disaster in Southeast Asia.

An Indian political leader could be killed, he said, and tension between the West and Iran is likely to increase, escalating into possible US military action after September 9, when fiery Saturn moves from Leo into Virgo.

"The last 200 years, whenever Saturn has gone into Virgo there has been either a world war or a mini world war," he told AFP.

It is not just in India that some are uneasy about what will transpire because of the eclipse.

In ancient China they were often associated with disasters, the death of an emperor or other dark events, and similar superstitions persist.

"The probability for unrest or war to take place in years when a solar eclipse happens is 95 percent," announced an article that attracted a lot of hits on the popular Chinese web portal Baidu.com.

Sanal Edamaruku, president of the Indian Rationalist Association, dismissed such doomsday predictions.

"Primarily, what we see with all these soothsayers and astrologers is that they're looking for opportunities to enhance their business with predictions of danger and calamity," he told AFP.

"They have been very powerful in India but over the last decade they have been in systematic decline."

Astronomers and scientists are also working to educate the public about the eclipse.

Travel firm Cox and Kings has chartered a Boeing 737-700 aircraft to give people the chance to see the eclipse from 41,000 feet (12,500 metres).

Experts will be on board to explain it to passengers, some of whom have paid 79,000 rupees (1,600 dollars) for a "sun-side" seat on the three-hour flight from New Delhi.

The eclipse's shadow is expected to pass over the aircraft at 15 times the speed of sound (Mach 15), said Ajay Talwar, president of the SPACE Group of companies that promotes science and astronomy.

"It's coming in the middle of the monsoon season. On the ground, there's a 40 percent chance of seeing it in India. On the aircraft you have almost a 90 percent chance of seeing the eclipse," he added.

Siva Prasad Tata, who runs the Astro Jyoti website, straddles the two worlds.

"There's no need to get too alarmed about the eclipse, they are a natural phenomenon," the astrologer told AFP.

But he added: "During the period of the eclipse, the opposite attracting forces are very, very powerful. From a spiritual point of view, this is a wonderful time to do any type of worship.

"It will bring about good results, much more than on an ordinary day."

OLD "KUWARTEL": TO BE RESTORED?

Restoration efforts are revealed in the white colored bricks....

Oslob Poblacion's main beach is known as Kuwartel Beach as far as I can remember in my childhood days.

It used to have sand and Oslobanons must have considered it as one of the best beaches in Cebu.

The shore was wide and "untouched" for we, children, can even catch "bacocos" which we would love to grill. The smell of the "burning" bacoco and its crispy-exotic taste give us unending pleasurable delight.

Family picnics, school batchmates and even "walk-in" beachgoers spend long time of fun on the beach while enjoying the sand, sun, food and sea water. Cottages are available for visitors who would spend a night or two in town.

BUT THAT WAS BEFORE.

Whether it is because of the growing number of locals who are getting the gravel and sand for house construction or is it due to the rising of sea water (or BOTH, others blame it to the folks building of seawall/breakwater/reef-raff) that the sand now has disappeared.

Kuwartel (as it was written on a signage hung on the Cuartel itself) Beach that was.

All you see now is a seawall.

In a recent vacation I had in town, I saw the site (pictures above). Having no prior information about it, I have concluded that it was undergoing restoration works, seeing raw stones devoid of brick-like forms and broken bricks scattered inside and around the structure.

Then I have come across this article.

Rehabilitating Oslob Cuartel

By Jobers Bersales
Cebu Daily News First Posted 11:50:00 06/18/2009 Filed Under: history, Construction & Property, Heavy construction

Cebu provincial engineer Eulogio Pelayre waxed poetic and at times romantic the other day as he explained his feeling of a sense of pride and a sense of history at being asked by the governor, Gwendolyn F. Garcia, to carry out the rehabilitation of the unfinished Oslob Cuartel that has almost gone to seed. For, in his words, no other Spanish period building in the country can match the architecture of this building: six roman arches spread on its façade and not just on the ground floor but also on the second story. If I may add, the arches also seemingly embrace the fabric of this building, creating what would have been a magnificent pasillo or hallway on both floors had it been finished.

The occasion that made the normally circumspect and quiet provincial engineer emotive was a meeting with Oslob’s vice mayor, Pacifica Letigio, together with the town’s councilors, barangay chairs and representatives, together with the Oslob Heritage Protection and Conservation Council at Museo Sugbo the other day. The venue was not an accident since these leaders were at the Museo to learn more about preparing museum exhibits – a culmination of a series of meetings that began when the governor quietly started the rehabilitation of this unfinished Spanish-era naval quarters early this year. An open air museum of sorts within a section of the building is in the works and what better way to learn about museums than to visit the premier historical museum in the province today.

Other than the provincial engineer, Tessie Javier, the provincial consultant for architectural affairs, also joined the group and showed the design for a park to be around the cuartel leading to the ruins of the hexagonal watchtower built by the great Fray Julian Bermejo in the early 1800s. The inauguration of a rehabilitated and well-lighted Cuartel is certain to happen in August as part of a long list of events that will mark the 440th anniversary of Cebu province.

According to local lore, the Oslob Cuartel was built around the final decades of Spanish rule and remained unfinished as events in Manila and the capital town of Cebu in 1898 overtook Spanish plans for what appears to be a Spanish naval station. No records have been found at the National Archives in Manila to help explain why this relatively huge structure was built in what was then as now a laid-back town. If my suspicions are right, this must have been intended as a naval station because Oslob faces not only the Bohol Sea but also the bend towards Tañon Strait and is so strategically located that on a normal day one can see not just Bohol and Siquijor but also parts of Mindanao and Negros Oriental.

Unfortunately, decades of neglect and the absence of a heritage movement – only active during the last three years in Oslob after the governor ordered the establishment of heritage councils all over the province – have led to the graduated theft of many of the coral stone blocks on the façade as well as the rear walls of the Cuartel. Unmindful of its distinct historic and aesthetic value, the unscrupulous removed these blocks, called tablillas in Spanish, ostensibly to sell them to manufacturers of costume jewelry and stonecraft, leaving huge gaps showing the argamasa type of masonry, believed to be a mixture of lime, egg-whites and coral rubble that has held this structure together over a century now.

There have been other plans to finish the Oslob Cuartel that were presented early on to the governor. But Governor Garcia wants as little intervention as possible in this unique and time-tested product of Spanish public works. And so the original design to have the structure roofed with clay tiles was squelched as the correct conservation practice would have been to let it remain unfinished and merely rehabilitate those sections of the building fabric that need to stabilized. This then is the task now facing the provincial engineer.

No wonder then that he left the group much more inspired and happy as the barangay chairmen and town councilors present that day committed to join the governor in this project by providing labor to complement the workforce provided by the province. This, as much of the stones needed for the rehabilitation began arriving from the town’s barangays two weeks ago. On Monday, everyone will converge at the Cuartel – both from the provincial government and from the town of Oslob — to carry out the spirit of “alayon”, hand in hand to finally save the cuartel from further ruin.

TOM CRUISE and the SMA BAND '85

Tom Cruise, yes Tom Cruise the Hollywood actor, when he was yet almost a nobody in movies, starred in TOP GUN and, yes, the (born on the) 4TH OF JULY.

At one time in our Philippine History, this day was INDEPENDENCE DAY not until the late President Diosdado Macapagal's term (out of US'lack of support as Historians would say) did he change ID back to June 12, as it really was (to Aguinaldo's credit).

In my early years in school, we hold no classes today owing it to the imported American FRIENDSHIP.

Brass bands all over the Philippines, especially in military camps - evenMORE in America (INDEPENDENCE DAY) today play marching tunes and what else they wish. Without mentioning the amazing hi-tech fireworks display.

This, is more than enough to recall my SMA days as member of the band.

MARICRES LAGARE was the Majorette, LOURDITA MENDEZ and JANET DELENA were her MINORETTEs.

GLENN TUMUSOK was the Band Leader and ROLDAN RONDERO was the CAT Officer in command.

Here we are with UNIFORMS ON! Heheheheheh....

UK, is not the country in your mind. But actually refers to the "mall" or "department store" of the most practical of people. UK is the UKAY-UKAY.

The word UK was popularized in a tv ad few years back referring to the long-existing UKAY-UKAY stores/stalls --- in that advertisement, a mother bought a gown for her daughter who was joining a certain contest. The mother told her daughter that she bought the said gown from UK, which means from the street stalls, the UKAY-UKAY.

Ukay in Cebuano means to UNPILE, UNSCRAMBLE or UNTANGLE.... And so to be able to choose the best items, UKAY jud!

Jackets, t-shirts, undies and practically ALL items are available here.

SHOES, ANYONE?
Thank God, it has improved. Shoes are now tied to its pair. Before? you had to spend another hour or day to search for the other one.... and WOW, just look at the BRAND, TRENDY aren't they?!

A HARVEST OF CALAMANSI AND A SPIDER BITE!

TODAY IS JUNE 5, 2009....

Early this morning, while about to prepare my things and pack them for my return to Iloilo, I delayed it, as going back to work is always a kill joy, picked some calamansi fruits from mother's two small trees. But mind you, they never cease to bear fruits the whole year round.

While I enjoy this some-therapeutic-act, I felt something crawling on the back of my head going down to my neck. As I raced my hand towards it, I felt two small opposing needle-like pointed things clamping on my neck... then I felt a split-second prick just as a tried to brush it away using my fingers...

Then I felt a numb from my neck that started to spread all over my body. In just few seconds I was motionless. My hands were cold while I stood stiff and began to observe the surrounding starting to move, rotating around me. My head started to feel light. I felt dizzy, i breathed very hard. Then darkness surrounded me as I see nothing but infinite darkness. I have no memory after that.

Then I died! Or at least I feared about it.

Trembling, I tried to run my palm, then fingers on the spot where the spider must have buried its teeth, over and over again. While doing this, i would try to feel if there was a real bite.

It was as if there was, and as there was NOT.

With desperation, I texted everybody I knew with SCIENTIFIC knowledge and otherwise.

Mother got me LANA sa LALA, and applied it without saying a word. Which I learned it was part of the CURING.

I learned two things: ONE, clean first the trees' surroundings before picking the fruits. And SECOND, NEVER GET involved with Spiders!

WHEN TRAVEL IS MADE EASY!

Owned and Operated by one Oslobanon (Caceresnon), the SUNRAYS bus line poses a quite tough competition with the CERES LINER.

One of the CERES aircon buses at Hagdan (Oslob) bridge-curve plying Cebu City and Liloan.

At one Hagdan ascent, from Alo.

It has been raining hard since Monday. In fact, our classes were disrupted by flood yesterday. The rain came very heavy early in the morning without discounting the small continuous ones the night before. Until mid-morning, just in time with the high tide sea water, the flood was almost knee-deep. The moving from the HED department to the main school was through the "sikad".

My coming back here to iloilo more than a week ago was no different. I was soaking wet with the heavy rainfall that made me almost decide several times to postpone my trip back....

It is also during these times when you become appreciative of this gigantic transport bus line CERES.

Thanks to the comfort and luxury this CERES bus offers while one travels.

The old stone church of Oslob before the fire of March 08

The old stone church at the town proper of Oslob in Cebu. It will
celebrate its 178th year from the laying of its cornerstone on
4 May 08.
On 26 March 08, an 8 hour fire gutted the more than a century old kumbento (parish house) and church of Oslob in Cebu. What was left were the thick stone walls and belfry as well as an icon of the parish patron. This is my tribute to this beautiful and historic church with photos taken in 2005 and 2006.

Located 117 kilometers southeast of Cebu City is the town of Oslob. First mentioned in 1690, it was only a visita of Boljoon. Founded by the Augustinians, it was turned over to the Jesuits in the year 1737 but was returned to them in 1742. The original fortified Spanish settlement was located in what was then called Bolocboloc but now known as Daanlungsod, (in Cebuano, means, old town). It’s high walls and watchtowers are still standing today minus the original chapel.

The current church, located a few kilometers from the fortified settlement in what was then known as Catarman (or Katadman) in the present Poblacion (town center) might not have been possible if not for one very decisive event: the victory of Fr. Julian Bermejo, parish priest of Boljoon, and the townspeople of Oslob against the Moro slave raiders led by Sultan Goranding in the year 1813. Near the waters off Sumilon Is., the soldier priest’s fleet of local defenders aided by his string of watchtowers successfully repelled and captured the leader. Since then, these places were now peaceful and threats of further raids diminished.

Julian Bermejo on 4 May 1830. The coral stone used for the walls and belfry were quarried from the seas, cut, polished and placed one on top of the other and cemented with lime from the ashes of seashells. Wood was sourced out from other places and islands while the church roof was made of tejas sourced out and baked locally from a place now known as Lulukhan. Construction of the church was not only done by the people of Oslob but townspeople from neighboring Tañon (now Santander) and Ivisan (now Nueva Caceres, Oslob) helped in building too. Because the town was not really rich and relied on voluntary labor, it was finished 18 years later in 1848.

Note the buttresses in each photo. The quadrilateral dome at the crossing of the transept and nave is made of wood. During the time of Fray de Santiago, the belfry was damaged by a typhoon. In 1932, the tejas roof was replace with galvanized iron sheets. In 1954, the wooden flooring of the church was replaced with baldozas.

On 7 November 1955, a fire of unknown cause gutted the church and in three hours, burned everything inside except for the icon of the Immaculate Conception. The people were devastated. They decided to rebuild the church and various fund raising activities were done. One of these, the Oslob Church Reconstruction Movement Caroling Team made the rounds during Christmas. Oslobanons living or working abroad also channeled funds for the church. Up until the 80’s there were several restoration works done on the church and the kumbento.

View of the church from the tennis court showing the right side including the attached kumbento. There seems to be a confusion on the fires that happened before this year’s unfortunate event. Two sources: Galende in Angels in Stone wrote that the church building was totally burned by guerillas in 1942 and was gutted by fire of unknown origin in 1955. He also mentions that the vault and dome later fell after the first fire. By the way, the Cebu Daily News article in the preceeding post takes this line. Allego, in his memorare, only mentions the 1955 fire as the 2nd cataclysm that befell the church. The first being a strong typhoon damaging the belfry during the time of Fray Gregorio de Santiago (1892-1898). I tend to go with the latter author.

With the March 08 fire, I am very much hopeful that with the people’s faith and resolve, the church will rise again.

NEW PICTURES of the NEW SMA!

Vacation is FINALLY over, and THAT IS FINAL!
A new school/academic year has started. Private schools are LUCKIER, they have been graced with a week long vacation extension. And that includes ME. But NOT soooo lucky when arriving here in Iloilo on Sunday - June 7, i was told that CHED R-VI announced early in the morning that all tertiary levels in the city shall start their classes on the 15th... I was half-luckier anyway!

SMA in Oslob must have started its academic year 2009-2010 yesterday!

I had taken new photos of her during my lucky vacation in town.

DAANLUNGSOD FIESTA

Stories have it, that Daanlungsod - the barangay located between Camburong and Calumpang to the South was ONCE the LUNGSOD or TOWN proper. For reasons, it was changed to where the Poblacion IS now. It further tells that whenever the PATRON was to be carried to the Poblacion, it becomes heavier for the townfolks to carry. And so light when it was time to be returned... Daanlungsod is where the NIGAD (the seaside well that has naturally cold potable waters) is situated.
